Pregnancy Massage Q&A

I’m eight weeks pregnant- can I have a massage?
Of course you can! There is no scientific evidence to prove that there is any link between having massage before the 12 week mark and miscarriage. The only reason you might not have a massage during this time is if you are feeling really sick. Otherwise we have massaged many women right from conception through to 42 weeks of pregnancy without any trouble at all.

My belly is huge- will I fit on the table?
Absolutely. The table can be adjusted to suit your tummy according to how far along you are. We have comfortably had women full term with twins lie safely on the table (and they loved every minute of it). The pregnancy mattress sits on top of the table so you can lie on your tummy without any pressure being put on the baby. We will add some more support so there is no strain on your lower back either.

How often should I have a pregnancy massage?
It’s really up to you and how your body feels. We do like to recommend a schedule similar to that of when you see your obstetrician. Monthly and then towards the end come fortnightly then weekly in the last month. This is because as you progress further into your pregnancy you will feel the effects of carrying the extra weight out the front of your body. It is quite common to have women coming every week in the last trimester as your hips and back become so sore it can interfere with your ability to get a good night sleep. Again you can always discuss with one of our qualified therapists what kind of routine to get into if you are unsure.

I’ve got a lot of swelling and water retention- will massage help?
It sure will. It helps to increase the body’s ability to eliminate excess fluid which you often get around the feet, hands and quite often face. This is called lymphatic drainage and it is important that you do continue to drink water after your massage to rehydrate.

Will massage put me into labour?
No. The massage we do is not intended to induce labour. We do have a thorough understanding of which points in the body are used to try bring it on but we avoid pressure on these. One of our therapists- Amy- has performed a few labour inducing massages but it is a very different treatment which has little success. We believe that the babies come when they want to come regardless of whether you’re having a massage or not. If you do want to induce labour a much more effective way would be to have an appointment with a qualified acupuncturist.

How long should I book an appointment for?
An hour is best for pregnancy massage. You are more than welcome to have less or more time but we feel we can do the best massage in an hour session.
